TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a globally recognized standardized exam designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. Widely accepted by universities, colleges, and institutions around the world, TOEFL measures one’s ability to understand, use, and communicate effectively in English across reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
TOEFL is offered in two main formats:
- TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test): The most common version, taken online, evaluates skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
- TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test): Less commonly used, this version also tests the same skills but is administered on paper.
TOEFL Test Sections
Reading (54-72 minutes):
This section consists of 3 to 4 passages covering various topics, each followed by 10 questions. The score for this section ranges from 0 to 30. Practicing with TOEFL reading tests can help improve your skills in this section.Listening (41-57 minutes):
The listening section includes 3 to 4 lectures (around 3 to 5 minutes each), followed by 6 questions. Additionally, you’ll listen to 2 everyday conversations and answer 5 questions for each. The accents used are primarily North American, with some from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.Speaking (17 minutes):
This section includes 4 tasks. The first task is an independent speaking task, where you express your opinion on a familiar topic, followed by 3 integrated tasks where you respond to content from both reading and listening sources. Preparation time for each task is provided, and your speaking score ranges from 0 to 4, which is then converted to a scale from 0 to 30.Writing (50 minutes):
The writing section includes two tasks:- Task 1: An integrated task, where you combine information from reading and listening materials.
- Task 2: An independent writing task, where you express and support your opinion on a given topic.
